History: Steven is a denizen of the World of Darkness (specifically new 2e). This means he lives on earth, but an earth with a hidden supernatural layer. Ghosts, demons, werewolves, and vampires are just the tip of the iceberg, and God is not only a real force, but a broken and vengeful machine.

Steven was born the son of a demon (a fallen shard of the god-machine) and a mortal man, and raised as normally as could be expected. Angels (less fallen shards) killed his dad, his mother and he lived on the run as faux foster child and parent as she changed forms and lives, and he grew up shy and paranoid. He had to shuffle schools constantly as their escape was compromised again and again and she slipped into new lives, or Covers. He was called, ironically, the devil's child, and investigated more than once for his "foster mom's" disappearances, but nothing stuck, mostly because there was nothing to stick. With so much hatred and distrust from the living, he turned to the dead. He gained an interest in the mundane and supernatural, specializing in ghosts and hauntings, and graduated college before returning to UCLA to study Anthropology with a specialization in ancient languages and translation. The year of his disappearance? 2008.
Personality: Secretive. Steven can take interest in people, things, and ideas, but he's not one to talk deeper than small talk. He does not, as a rule, communicate with others about his past or identity unless they need to know.

Curious. Steven loves to hoard knowledge and explore new places and ideas. He loves to learn about others.

Friendly. Steven is socially kind and willing to help others out, so long as he doesn't put himself at risk doing so.

Suspicious. Despite his friendliness, it's hard to truly win his trust, and he sleeps with one eye open. Hard not to, when the Machine wants you, dead or alive.

Intelligent. Steven is VERY smart, and VERY clever, too. He thinks fast on his feet and has a huge base of knowledge to draw from.

Suitability: Steven is suitable because he's curious about what's going on and smart and humble enough to accept help from those who know more... And kind enough to return the favor. The agency scratches his scarred back, he scratches theirs.

Also, he's from a urban fantasy/drama/light horror game system and I love tying him to the Stranger in AUs already.

Powers/Abilities: Steven's main powers are his two Embeds, the ability to hack reality, though in his case they actually affect the mind. He can use Occam's Razor to convince people that a simpler explanation than reality he provides is the truth, and can use the Tower of Babel embed to enforce artificial language barriers. Both these have the chance to fail. As the Machine/entity understands him, he might gain a third, fourth, or even a fifth embed, but to gain the fifth is to lose full control of the self. At stage 5 on the demonblooded cypher, the path of progression for half-demons, the machine - or in this case, the entity - can take control of the half-demon in question for a moment here and there. Just long enough to do a single action, but the length of that action can vary; it could be attacking someone, or making a phone call, or hacking a computer and uploading a file.

In addition, he has lesser powers. He is loosely psychometric, so can read objects' pasts. He has no control over this ability. He is able to tell when demons lie. He has a supernatural talent for language, speaking fluent English and Cantonese as well as less-fluent Russian, French, Aramaic, and Hebrew; and the ability to sense and lightly manipulate aspects of the god machine. He can gain aether from sites of power, and use it to empower and activate his interlocks. He has Eidetic memory.
